Camp
Darom
Camp Darom was founded twenty nine years ago, by Rabbi Rafael
G. Grossman, as a community service of the Baron Hirsch
Congregation of Memphis, Tennessee. The first - and still
the only - sleep away camp under Orthodox auspices in the
entire South, Camp Darom provides a healthy and spirited
camp experience in a unique and traditional environment.
Over the years, we have regularly attracted campers from
every single state in the Southern and Midwestern United
States. Our greatest testimonial is the large number of
second generation campers we now service. Those who attended
our camp in its first years are now sending their own children
to receive that same unique experience. While the camp is
over a quarter century old, each season is looked at as
a unique and independent entity, as we strive to always
give our campers a unique experience that they will remember
the rest of their lives.
Staff:
Camp Darom has always enjoyed a professional top notch staff
which is filled with dedication and enthusiasm. Our senior
staff consists of adults who are devoted educators, with years
of experience in camping, teaching, and supervision. Our counselors
are young men and women with significant camping experience,
who are totally dedicated towards giving their campers a safe
and fun-filled summer. The devoted support staff is working
24/7 to make sure camp runs smoothly. Many of our former staff
members have gone on to become communal leaders, and today
hold prominent positions both here and in Israel.
A
local nurse visits camp daily and is on call 24/7. As well,
doctors from Memphis make bi-weekly visits to campers who
need special care. Park rangers are also on call 24/7 and
keep a constant eye on the safety of our camp.
Camper
Makeup:
Camp Darom has campers from across the United States including
Tennessee, Louisiana, Georgia, Florida, New York, Illinois,
Texas, Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, and Arkansas. Campers
come from both religious and non-religious backgrounds.
Israel:
Many of our activities, as well as the camp atmosphere, are
devoted to teaching the campers about our Jewish homeland,
the State of Israel. We always have an Israeli component to
our staff, and some of our major activities teach about life
in Israel. Whether it is spending a day pretending to be training
in the Israel Defense Force, or learning about the culture
of a particular Jewish ethnic group in Israel through food,
dance, music, or dress, the children go home with an extensive
knowledge about life in Israel, both past and present.
Shabbat
and Torah:
Perhaps the most special part of Camp Darom is how we create
a community which grows together Jewishly. Our Shabbat experience
is both joyous and inspirational. Shabbat includes fancy Shabbat
meals and davening services filled with song and dance.
Our
daily classes are taught in a lively and interactive way where
we show the joy of learning Torah. Most of our teaching is
done through activities, so that campers continuously engaged.
